Translation alchemy? Exploring Julia Hartwig’s translation art

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest dookreślenie pojęcia alchemii przekładu, która ma pojawiać się w tłumaczeniach wierszy wykonanych przez Julię Hartwig, uznaną polską poetkę i tłumaczkę poezji francuskiej i amerykańskiej. Ma ona także na celu wskazanie, w jaki sposób alchemia ta przejawia się w tekście docelowym. Praca składa się z dwóch części: teoretycznej i praktycznej. W podzielonej na trzy rozdziały części teoretycznej przedstawiono ogólny zarys stanu badań nad tłumaczem, a także ich znaczenie w obrębie przekładoznawstwa. Zawiera ona również przegląd wybranych podejść do przekładu poezji ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem strategii i pojęcia dominanty semantycznej. Na tym etapie pracy przedstawiono też najważniejsze informacje biograficzne dotyczące Hartwig i scharakteryzowano jej twórczość przekładową. Część praktyczna pracy podzielona jest na cztery rozdziały poświęcone analizie jej wybranych przekładów wierszy Blaise’a Cendrarsa, Guillaume’a Apollinaire’a, Marianne Moore i Williama Carlosa Williamsa. Niektóre z nich zestawiono także z tłumaczeniami innego autorstwa z zamiarem zidentyfikowania cech wyróżniających jej twórczość translatorską i przyczyniających się do powstania wspomnianej alchemii.

The aim of the present thesis is to define “translation alchemy”, which presumably emerges in Julia Hartwig’s renditions of poetry and to determine how it manifests itself in the text. Julia Hartwig is an accomplished Polish poet and translator of French and American poetry with a vast oeuvre. This thesis consists of two parts: a theoretical and an analytical one. The theoretical part, which comprises three chapters, begins with an overview of research focused on the figure of a translator and signals its significance in Translation Studies. Subsequently, chosen perspectives on poetry translation are presented with the special focus on the strategies and the concept of semantic dominant. Finally, the essential biographical information on Hartwig is provided together with a description of her translation work. The analytical part consists of four chapters and is devoted to the examination of Hartwig’s renditions of the chosen poems by Blaise Cendrars, Guillaume Apollinaire, Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams with a view to exploring her translation art. If possible, they are also confronted with the renditions of a given poem produced by other translators.
