Traditional Marriage Rites in Eastern Nigeria: A Case Study of Umudioka, Orlu, Imo State
Abstrakt (EN)
Traditional marriage practices among the Igbo people of Nigeria have evolved over the years due to modernisation, occupation, Christianity, and education. However, despite the increasing influence of foreign factors, marriage in the southeastern region of Nigeria remains deeply rooted in the cultural ideology of the people. This study reviewed the traditional marriage rites and processes among the Ndigbo1, using Umudioka as a case study. The research used structural functionalism and modernism theories as guiding frameworks to examine the historical and evolving nature of marriage practices among the Umudioka people. Through interviews and direct observation, the study found that some traditional marriage practices have been replaced or eroded due to contact with other cultures, Western education, occupations, and other factors. Despite the influences, the central purpose of marriage in Umudioka, which is to ensure social stability and preserve lineage, remains intact. The study predicts that the expansive tendencies of Igbo people will lead to new adoptions and adaptations from other cultures.
