Speaking of freedom: The notion and dynamics of freedom in Athenian oratory and Athenian democracy

Niniejsza rozprawa stanowi studium funkcjonowania i retoryki koncepcji wolności w korpusie tzw. Dziesięciu Mówców Attyckich, zawierającym mowy ateńskie z V i IV w. p.n.e. Jednym z jej podstawowych celów jest zbadanie, na jakiej zasadzie problematyka wolności jest przywoływana w dyskursie politycznym demokracji ateńskiej. Analizuję w niej na podstawie ok. 140 zachowanych mów, w jaki sposób pojęcia związane z wolnością wyrażają powszechną moralność i jak są wykorzystywane do celów retorycznych. Zajmuję się również kwestią postrzegania nie-obywateli przez obywateli i kontekstami, w jakich wspomina się o nich w mowach.

The present thesis is a study of the representation and rhetoric of the concept of freedom in the corpus of the so-called Ten Attic Orators, encompassing Athenian speeches from the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. One of its primary aims is to investigate the modes in which the topic of freedom is evoked in the political discourse of Athenian democracy. It analyses the ways in which the concepts associated with freedom, as they appear in some 140 surviving orations, convey popular morality and are commonly employed for rhetorical purposes. It also deals with the issue of perception of non-citizens by the citizens and the contexts in which they are referred to in Athenian speeches.
