Praca analizuje francuską obecność wojskową w regionie Sahelu w latach 1989–2024, oceniając, czy działania Paryża stabilizowały region, czy też utrwalały jego problemy. Praca ukazuje historyczne uwarunkowania relacji francusko-afrykańskich, motywy strategiczne oraz znaczenie gospodarcze Sahelu, wskazując na dziedzictwo kolonialne wpływające na współczesne napięcia. Opisuje przebieg i rezultaty operacji Serval i Barkhane oraz współpracę Francji z państwami regionu i organizacjami międzynarodowymi. Praca pokazuje, że mimo sukcesów taktycznych działania militarne nie doprowadziły do trwałej poprawy bezpieczeństwa, a narastające nastroje antyfrancuskie, kryzysy polityczne i wejście nowych aktorów osłabiły pozycję Francji i uwidoczniły potrzebę alternatywnych modeli stabilizacji.

The thesis analyses France’s military presence in the Sahel region from 1989 to 2024, assessing whether Paris’s actions contributed to stabilising the region or reinforced its existing problems. It presents the historical background of Franco-African relations, strategic motivations and the economic importance of the Sahel, highlighting the colonial legacy that continues to shape contemporary tensions. The study describes the course and outcomes of Operations Serval and Barkhane, as well as France’s cooperation with regional states and international organisations. It demonstrates that despite certain tactical successes, military efforts did not lead to lasting security improvements. Growing anti-French sentiment, political crises and the involvement of new external actors weakened France’s position and revealed the need for alternative stabilisation models.
