Rozpoczyna się od przedstawienia genezy gatunku gotyckiego, zwracając uwagę na początki tego nurtu w XVIII wieku w Wielkiej Brytanii. Omawia główne cechy charakteryzujące te powieści oraz rozwój gatunku na przestrzeni czasu. Analiza skupia się głównie na trzech wielkich dziełach autorów irlandzkiego pochodzenia: Draculi Brama Stokera, Portrecie Doriana Graya Oscara Wilde’a oraz Carmilli Josepha Sheridana Le Fanu. The thesis focuses on analysing the ways in which British authors of Gothic novels created villains in their works. It begins by outlining the origins of the Gothic genre, and discussing the main characteristics of these novels and the development of the genre over time. A key element of the work is a discussion of the characters of Gothic villains, who play an important role in creating tension and conflict in the narrative. The analysis focuses mainly on three great works by Irish authors: Bram Stoker's Dracula, Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray and Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla. The study of villains covers a variety of character types. It examines motifs, symbolism associated with the characters, and psychological aspects of the villains. The work also considers the influence of the Gothic novel on various cultural fields, such as film and theatre.
