In Search of Truth: G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown Stories as the Medium of Moral and Philosophical Reflection

Niniejsza praca omawia opowiadania detektywistyczne o księdzu Brownie G.K. Chestertona, które w swym przekazie problematyki moralno-filozoficznej daleko przewyższają to, co można by im przypisać jako tekstom należącym do literatury popularnej. Rozdział pierwszy, który koncentruje się na postaci księdza Browna, zawiera obszerną komparatystyczną analizę postaci księdza detektywa i św. Tomasza z Akwinu z dzieła Chestertona „Święty Tomasz z Akwinu”. Paralele wyłaniające się z przeprowadzonego porównania ujawniają zadziwiające podobieństwo obydwu literackich kreacji i prowadzą do interpretacji figury księdza Browna jako Chestertonowskiej propozycji świętości na współczesne czasy. Kolejne rozdziały pracy skupiają się na pogłębionej analizie wybranych motywów związanych z zagadnieniem poszukiwania prawdy i będących jednocześnie szczególnie ważnymi nośnikami problematyki moralno-filozoficznej w omawianych opowiadaniach. W tej części rozprawy badaniu poddano motywy niewidzialności i lustra (rozdział drugi), maski i przebrania oraz teatru (rozdział trzeci), a także metaforykę światła i ciemności (rozdział czwarty). Ostatni rozdział pracy przedstawia cztery filary myślenia i działania księdza Browna – koncepcję grzechu pierworodnego, wolnej woli, zdrowego rozsądku i obronę ludzi słabych. Zagadnienia te, tak charakterystyczne dla ogólnej myśli Chestertona, są również żywo uobecnione w jego opowiadaniach o księdzu detektywie.

This dissertation discusses the Father Brown detective stories by G. K. Chesterton, which, conveying moral and philosophical reflection, far exceed the issues that might be attributed to them as the texts belonging to popular literature. The first chapter, focusing on the Father Brown character, includes the comparative analysis of the character of Father Brown and that of St Thomas Aquinas, the hero of Chesterton’s St. Thomas Aquinas. The parallels emerging from the comparison reveal a surprising resemblance between the two fictional creations and lead to the understanding of the Father Brown figure as Chesterton’s proposal of sainthood for modern times. The following chapters of the thesis are dedicated to a deeper analysis of the selected motifs that are connected with the issue of searching for truth and are particularly important vehicles for the moral and philosophical content of the stories under discussion. This part of the dissertation explores the motifs of invisibility and the mirror (Chapter 2), the mask, disguise and the theatre (Chapter 3), and also the imagery of light and darkness (Chapter 4). The last chapter of the dissertation presents four pillars of Father Brown’s way of thinking and acting – the concepts of original sin, free will, common sense and the defence of the weak. These questions, so characteristic of the general thought of Chesterton, are also vividly manifested in his stories featuring the priest detective.
