The Salve Regina of the Jesuits of Glatz (Kłodzko): Reconstructing Musical Tradition Tradition can be constructed, among others, by reference to customs that were already regularly observed in the past. This strategy was successfully applied by the Jesuits working in Silesia and Kłodzko County (ziemia kłodzka). From the heritage of earlier periods they took over selected texts of culture together with their artistic forms, and adapted them for the needs of their pastoral work. One example is the Latin antiphon Salve Regina, which was sung in many Jesuit churches in historical Silesia in isolation from its natural liturgical context. This service, initiated in the mid-14th century by Arnošt of Pardubice, first Archbishop of Prague, was revived by the Jesuits of Glatz, administrators of Arnošt’s home parish. In 1645 they established a special foundation in Glatz and entrusted the task of regularly performing the Salve Regina (sung every Saturday) to the students from St Aloysius Gonzaga Convictus (boarding school) which they maintained in that town. The dynamic growth of the Convictus, supported by new foundations added in later years, contributed to the creation of a substantial music repertoire and to the dissemination of that entire body of tradition throughout Silesia. A hitherto unknown document of that tradition is MS 1100 of the National Museum in Warsaw: Sacrum votivum de Beata Virgine compiled in 1692. The rediscovery of this liturgical book from the Glatz parish church makes possible the task of reconstructing that custom and of reassembling its various elements into a whole.
