Czas wolny migrantów zamorskich: przypadek polskich migrantów w Chicago

Artykuł poświęcony jest znaczeniom nadawanym czasowi wolnemu przez polskich migrantów w metropolii chicagowskiej. Materiały empiryczne zebrano w 2014 roku w trakcie półrocznych badań terenowych. W tekście przedstawiono dwie strategii mówienia o czasie wolnym: akcentowanie braku czasu wolnego na emigracji i akcentowanie bogactwa i rozmaitości zajęć migrantów w czasie wolnym. Umieszczono je w kontekście kultury czasu wolnego i pracy USA oraz historii polskich migracji do USA. yreżimów moralnych kraju przyjmującego i wysyłającego, jak i od reżimu mobilności, który normalizuje osiadłość i problematyzuje migrację. Strategie mówienia o czasie wolnym są wypadkową konieczności lawirowania między tymi reżimami, a jednocześnie pokazują samoświadomość i sprawczość migrantów.

The article focuses on the meanings of leisure among Polish migrants in Chicago metropolitan area. The empirical material was collected in 2014 during a six months long fieldwork. Two strategies of speaking about leisure are presented: emphasizing the lack of free time among migrants and emphasizing the richness and diversity of migrants’ leisure pursuits. Both are placed in the context of the U.S. leisure and work ethics as well as the history of migration from Poland to the U.S. The analyses demonstrate that the meanings of leisure that migrants articulate are shaped by moral regimes of both receiving and sending countries, as well as by mobility regime that naturalizes sedentary lifestyles and problematizes mobility. The strategies of speaking about leisure adopted by migrants are an outcome of the navigation between these regimes. At the same time, they reveal self-reflexivity and agency of migrants.
