COVID-19, the first pandemic of the time of globalization and of widespread access to the Internet, as an effect of the virus whose aetiology and effects are unknown, created a favourable atmosphere for disinformation and propaganda campaigns. China and Russia made ample use of it, heading for accomplishing their geostrategic purposes, particularly to weaken the Euroatlantic bloc. They launched an extensive campaign using the tools of public diplomacy, of traditional as well as social media, where they spread a message that was favourable to them and very detrimental to the efforts of Western countries trying to curb the effects of the pandemic (because it e.g. propagates fake news and conspiracy theories concerning COVID-19).
