An annotated translation from Polish into English of excerpts from Jacek Dubois’ children’s book entitled “A wszystko przez faraona”

Niniejsza praca to tłumaczenie z komentarzem z języka polskiego na język angielski wybranych fragmentów książki dla dzieci pt. „A wszystko przez faraona” autorstwa Jacka Dubois z 2005r. Praca składa się z wprowadzenia, trzech rozdziałów, gdzie dwa pierwsze rozdziały są teoretyczne a ostatni jest praktyczny, oraz wniosków. Pierwszy rozdział składa się z wprowadzenia do teorii translatoryki, historii przekładu, krótkiego przedstawienia różnic między językami polskim i angielskim, opisania metod i procedur tłumaczeniowych, a także roli tłumacza w przekładzie. W drugim rozdziale znajdują się informacje dotyczące literatury dla dzieci, w tym definicja literatury, elementy różniące literaturę dla dzieci od literatury ogólnej, a także znane techniki translacyjne często wykorzystywane w tłumaczeniu literatury dziecięcej. Trzeci rozdział zaczyna się wyjaśnieniem kwestii tłumaczenia z komentarzem oraz przedstawienia autora książki oraz krótkiego streszczenia książki, po czym następuje część praktyczna. Tłumaczenie z komentarzem zostało podzielone na podrozdziały odpowiadające zagadnieniom, które autor pracy zamierzał omówić. W pierwszym podrozdziale omówione są imiona postaci i miejsc występujących w książce oraz podane możliwe propozycje imion wykorzystujące wcześniej opisane techniki tłumaczeniowe. W następnych podrozdziałach przytaczane są fragmenty książki wraz z propozycją tłumaczenia w tabeli, a następnie opisem i analizą procesu tłumaczeniowego i uzasadnieniem podjętych decyzji pod tabelą. W tych podrozdziałach znajdują się inne kwestie sprawiające trudności tłumaczeniowe, w tym: jak kontekst wpływa na tłumaczenie pewnych słów; tłumaczenie języka nacechowanego emocjonalnie; tłumaczenie wyrażeń idiomatycznych, zwłaszcza wykorzystanych w tekście dosłownie; tłumaczenie krótkich wierszy występujących w książce; tłumaczenie odniesień kulturowych; tłumaczenie dialogu gdzie zestawione są ze sobą dwa języki; a także tłumaczenie dłuższego fragmentu tekstu, by ocenić jak tłumaczenie dłuższego fragmentu wpływa na tłumaczenie poszczególnych zdań. Praca kończy się podsumowaniem, w którym przedstawione są wyniki tłumaczenia i analizy.

The following thesis is a translation with commentary of excerpts from Jacek Dubois’s chil-dren’s book “A wszystko przez faraona” written in 2005 from Polish into English. The work consists of an introduction, three chapters, in which the first two chapters are theoretical and the last chapter is practical, and conclusions. The first chapter contains: an introduction to translation theory, the history of translation, a short characterisation of differences between the Polish and English languages, a description of translation methods and translation procedures, and also the role of translator in the process. In the second chapter, there is information regarding literature for children, among which: the definition of literature, elements that dif-ferentiate children’s literature from general literature, as well as common translation techniques used in translating children’s literature. The third chapter starts with a clarification of the concept of an annotated translation and introduces the author of the book and gives a short summary of the book, after which the practical part follows. The annotated translation was divided into subchapters based on the problems the author of the work intended to highlight. The first subchapter involves proper names of characters and places appearing in the book and provides possible translations using techniques provided previously. The following subchapters contain excerpts from the book along with corresponding translations side-by-side in tables, and a description and analysis of encountered translation problems and explaining their decisions. These subchapters contain translation problems such as: the influence of context on translated words; translation of emotional language; translation of idiomatic phrases, especially when used literally; translation of short poems that appeared in the book; translation of cultural references; translation of a dialogue in which two languages are juxtaposed; and translation of a longer fragment to determine how it affects singular sentences. The work ends with conclusions which present the results of the translation and the analysis.
