Using corpora for an analysis of writing style: a comparative study of selected novels by Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë

Jane Austen i Charlotte Brontë niezmiennie plasują się w czołówce najbardziej wpływowych postaci brytyjskiej literatury kobiecej. Głównym celem niniejszej pracy była analiza porównawcza stylów pisarskich Jane Austen i Charlotte Brontë przy użyciu narzędzi lingwistyki korpusowej. Badanie skupione było wokół dwóch pytań badawczych: „Jakie cechy charakterystyczne wyróżniają prozę obu autorek?” oraz „Jakie wyraźne różnice stylistyczne występują między ich tekstami?”. Aby odpowiedzieć na te pytania, stworzono korpus złożony z sześciu powieści (po trzy dla każdej z autorek), podzielony na dwa subkorpusy. W analizie ilościowej i jakościowej wykorzystano analizę częstotliwości, słów kluczowych oraz konkordancji, a także analizę złożoności leksykalnej i składniowej. Wyniki badania wskazują, że styl Charlotte Brontë jest silnie zakorzeniony w tradycji gotyckiej i romantycznej. Wskazuje na to wyższy stopień złożoności leksykalnej, obecność terminologii związanej z metafizyką i naturą oraz opisywanie cielesnego wymiaru przeżyć bohaterów, a sfera emocjonalna jest akcentowana także poprzez wzmożone stosowanie znaków wykrzyknienia i zapytania. Język Jane Austen natomiast pozostaje osadzony w tradycji XIX-wiecznej powieści realistyczno-obyczajowej i oświecenia. Autorka polegała na złożonej składni do opisu struktur społecznych, co wykazano poprzez wyższą frekwencję zdań podrzędnie złożonych oraz dłuższą strukturę zdań składowych. Ponadto proza Austen charakteryzuje się stabilnym, równomiernie rozłożonym zróżnicowaniem słownictwa oraz leksykalnym skupieniem na relacjach rodzinnych i podmiotowości kobiet. Wykorzystanie metod korpusowych pozwoliło na identyfikację specyfiki warsztatu pisarskiego obu autorek oraz określenie dzielących je różnic stylistycznych.

Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë consistently rank among the most influential figures in British literature and the history of women’s writing. The main aim of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of their writing styles using corpus linguistics tools. The study centred on two research questions: what distinctive features characterise the prose of both authors, and what clear stylistic differences exist between their texts. To answer these questions, a corpus comprising six novels (three by each author) was created, divided into two subcorpora. The quantitative and qualitative analysis utilised frequency analysis, keyword analysis and concordance analysis in SketchEngine, as well as lexical and syntactic complexity analysers (LCA and L2SCA). The results of the study indicate that Charlotte Brontë’s style is strongly rooted in the Gothic and Romantic traditions. This is indicated by a higher degree of lexical complexity, the presence of terminology related to metaphysics and nature, and the description of the physical dimension of the characters’ experiences, with the emotional sphere being emphasised through the increased use of exclamation and question marks. Jane Austen’s language, on the other hand, remains rooted in the tradition of social realism and the Enlightenment. The author relied on complex syntax to describe social structures, as demonstrated by the higher frequency of subordinate clauses and the longer structure of constituent sentences. Furthermore, Austen’s prose is characterised by a stable, evenly distributed lexical variation and a lexical focus on family relationships and female subjectivity. The use of corpus-based methods has enabled a precise identification of the distinctive features of both authors’ writing styles and a clear delineation of the stylistic differences between them.
