Quartz Crystal Nanobalance Measurements in Electrocatalysis

In this chapter the basic principles of the operation of the Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Nanobalance (EQCN) are presented. In particular, the article focuses on the non-mass effects affecting the EQCN response, which are crucial in proper interpretation of the EQCN signals. In this aspect also the process of correct EQCN calibration is important. The variant of the method with energy dissipation measurements (QCM-D) has been briefly characterized. The examples of the EQCN use in electrocatalysis have been chosen to show the goals of EQCN utilization in electrocatalysis and also to highlight the limitations of the technique. Technical problems and the ways of their overcoming have been described, based on literature and the authors’ own experience.
