In this article we answer the question of why categories are becomingmore and more popular in physics, mathematics and philosophy. The article presentsa review of the role of categories in the philosophy of mathematics, in the foundationsof mathematics, in metaphysics and in quantum mechanics. Our claim is that categorytheory is a formal ontology that captures the relational aspects of the given domainin question.
