Hazard jako czynnik rozwoju miasta na przykładzie Las Vegas

Las Vegas to miasto, którego dynamiczny rozwój jest związany z legalizacją hazardu w stanie Nevada w 1931 roku. Decyzja ta, w połączeniu z uproszczeniem przepisów dotyczących zawierania małżeństw, wyróżniała stan na tle całych Stanów Zjednoczonych i przyciągała zarówno inwestorów, jak i turystów. Z czasem Las Vegas zaczęto postrzegać jako światową stolicę hazardu i rozrywki, a nietypowe kasyna stały się jego znakiem rozpoznawczym. Hotele-kasyna oferują nie tylko gry hazardowe, ale również wiele innych form rozrywki. W pracy przedstawiono, jak kasyna wpłynęły na rozwój przestrzenny, gospodarczy i wizerunkowy miasta. Głównym celem pracy było przedstawienie kluczowych czynników, które przyczyniły się do przekształcenia Las Vegas z pustynnej osady w dynamiczne centrum turystyki rozrywkowej. Zwrócono również uwagę na rozwój infrastruktury hotelarsko-kasynowej, znaczenie ulicy The Strip i centrum oraz zjawisko turystyki hazardowej. Pokrótce przedstawiono konkurencyjne ośrodki hazardowe na świecie (m.in. Makau, Atlantic City, Reno), aby wskazać różnice i podobieństwa w modelach rozwoju miast. Czynniki, jakie ukształtowały Las Vegas, związane były z lokalizacją, prawem stanowym, gospodarką, środowiskiem przyrodniczym i kształtowaniem wizerunku miasta. W przypadku Las Vegas sektor rozrywkowy definiował nie tylko wygląd i funkcje przestrzeni, ale też globalny wizerunek miasta.

Las Vegas is a city whose rapid growth is related to the legalization of gambling in the state of Nevada in the year 1931. This decision, combined with the simplification of marriage laws, set the state apart from the rest of the United States and attracted both investors and tourists. Over time, Las Vegas came to be seen as the gambling and entertainment capital of the world, and the unique casinos became its trademark. Hotel-casinos offer not only gambling, but also many other forms of entertainment. The report shows how casinos have influenced the spatial, economic and image development of the city. The main objective of the paper was to present the key factors that contributed to the transformation of Las Vegas from a desert settlement into a dynamic center of entertainment tourism. Attention was also paid to the development of hotel and casino infrastructure, the importance of The Strip and downtown, and the phenomenon of gambling tourism. Competing gambling centers around the world (Macau, Atlantic City, Reno, among others) were briefly presented to point out differences and similarities in urban development models. The factors that shaped Las Vegas were related to location, state laws, the economy, the natural environment, and shaping the city's image. In the case of Las Vegas, the entertainment sector defined not only the appearance and function of the space, but also the global image of the city.
