The subject of this thesis is an analysis of changes in residential space and their connection to the individual stories of the residents of the building at 30a Polna Street in Warsaw. The theoretical section discusses the historical and social contexts of housing development and the functioning of the housing estate, as well as issues related to the apartment and the housing estate as spaces of social practices. The presented considerations concern grassroots initiatives, participation, the reinterpretation of residential space, and the treatment of the apartment as a record of social life; they form the basis for the author’s original research-and-creation method. The research component involves the implementation of a project based on thirteen in-depth interviews with residents, during which the history of the apartments’ transformations was jointly reconstructed using archival plans, and “emotion maps” were created to document experiences related to specific changes. The result of these activities was a multi-layered visual installation presented during the exhibition Polna 30a: What Stories Do Our Apartments Tell?. The concluding section outlines the project’s implementation—from the conceptual stage, through field research and exhibition preparation, to the evaluation of the activities carried out.
