Chosen aspects of translating children's literature from English into Polish and German on the example of Sarah Crossan's novel “One”

Niniejsza praca licencjacka składa się z dwóch części — teoretycznej i praktycznej. Część teoretyczna złożona jest z trzech rozdziałów. W pierwszym rozdziale wprowadzone zostały najważniejsze pojęcia używane w dalszej części pracy takie jak literatura dziecięca, powieść wierszowana oraz ekwiwalencja. W rozdziale drugim omówiono tłumaczenie tekstów dla dzieci i młodzieży. Poruszone zostały aspekty takie jak definicja procesu tłumaczenia, czynniki istotne w tłumaczeniu dla dzieci i młodzieży, techniki i strategie tłumaczeniowe oraz tłumaczenie nazw własnych. W trzecim rozdziale podjęto temat tłumaczenia poezji oraz tłumaczenia poezji dla dzieci. Opisane zostały w nim: występujący w polskich tłumaczeniach wierszy mit poetyckości oraz cechy charakterystyczne odróżniające tłumaczenie poezji dla dzieci od tłumaczenia poezji dla dorosłych. Czwarty rozdział pracy stanowi część praktyczną. Zostały w nim omówione wybrane fragmenty tekstu oryginalnego oraz tłumaczenia na język niemiecki i na język polski powieści wierszowanej pod tytułem „Tippi i ja” autorstwa Sarah Crossan. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona decyzjom tłumaczeniowym podjętym w tych fragmentach, strategiom i technikom powziętym przez tłumaczy oraz różnicom i podobieństwom pomiędzy tłumaczeniami.

This Bachelor’s Thesis consists of two parts — the theoretical part and the practical part. The theoretical part consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces the most important concepts used in the rest of the thesis such as children’s literature, verse novel, and equivalence. The second chapter discusses the translation of texts for children and teenagers. Aspects such as the definition of the translation process, factors important in translating for children and teenagers, translation techniques and strategies, and the translation of proper names are addressed. The third chapter deals with the translation of poetry and the translation of poetry for children. It describes the myth of poeticism present in Polish poetry translations and the characteristics that distinguish the translation of poetry for children from the translation of poetry for adults. The fourth chapter of the work is the practical part. It discusses selected excerpts from the original text as well as from the German and Polish translations of the verse novel “One” by Sarah Crossan. Particular attention is given to the translation decisions made in these extracts, the strategies and techniques adopted by the translators, and the differences and similarities between the translations.
