An Analysis of Translations of Chosen Christian Prayers into the Chinese Language

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza chińskich tłumaczeń czterech modlitw chrześcijańskich: Modlitwy Pańskiej, Nicejsko-konstantynopolitańskiego wyznania wiary, Apostolskiego symbolu wiary oraz Pozdrowienia anielskiego. Praca zawiera podsumowanie najważniejszych wydarzeń związanych z rozwojem chrześcijaństwa w Chinach oraz przedstawia jego obecną sytuację. Omówiono również kształtowanie się wyżej wymienionych modlitw. Dodatkowo, w pracy zarysowano temat tłumaczenia. Przedstawiono najważniejsze chińskie teorie przekładu z dwudziestego wieku oraz zagadnienie ekwiwalencji dynamicznej w kontekście tłumaczenia Biblii. Zarysowano również historię tłumaczenia tekstów chrześcijańskich na język chiński. Główną część pracy stanowi analiza czterech wyżej wymienionych modlitw. Na początku omówiono znaczenie danej modlitwy w oparciu o tekst oryginału, a następnie szczegółowo przeanalizowano jej chiński przekład. W przypadkach, gdy modlitwa została również przetłumaczona na klasyczny język chiński, obie wersje zostały poddane analizie.

This thesis presents an analysis of the Chinese translations of four Christian prayers, which are the Lord’s Prayer, the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, the Apostles’ Creed and the Hail Mary. It contains a summary of the most important historical events that concern the development of Christianity in China. It also briefly presents the current situation of Christianity in China. The history and development of the aforementioned prayers are described as well. Moreover, the work shortly introduces the topic of translation. The most important Chinese translation theories from the twentieth century are presented, as well as Eugene Nida’s dynamic equivalence in context of Bible translation. Additionally, a short summary of translation of Christian writings into the Chinese language is contained. The main part of the thesis constitutes an analysis of the four prayers. First the meaning of the original text of prayer is discussed, followed by a detailed deconstruction of the Chinese translation. In cases where the Classical Chinese versions exist, they are examined as well.
