When fire meets water: A comparative analysis of metaphors and idioms in the original English and Polish dubbed version of the Disney movie Elemental

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza porównawcza konceptualnych metafor i idiomów zastosowanych w angielskiej oraz polskiej wersji filmu animowanego Disneya Elemental (2023) w celu budowy świata przedstawionego związanego z żywiołami (przede wszystkim ogniem i wodą), ich antropomorfizacją i interakcjami między nimi. Celem pracy jest określenie, jak tłumacze podchodzą do tłumaczeń metafor i idiomów w dubbingu oraz w jakim stopniu mapowanie metafor odnoszących się do żywiołów zostało zachowane w języku docelowym. Rozdział pierwszy skupia się na specyfice dubbingu jako tłumaczenia audiowizualnego oraz o ograniczeniach, jakie niesie ze sobą dubbing. Drugi rozdział koncentruje się na wyjaśnieniu zagadnień teorii metafory pojęciowej, metafor, idiomów i technik tłumaczeniowych tych środków językowych. Rozdział trzeci to analiza zgromadzonych figur retorycznych, przeprowadzona w oparciu o techniki tłumaczeniowe metafor według Newmarka (1988) oraz idiomów według Baker (2018). W konkluzjach omówiono wyniki analizy i wyciągnięte z niej wnioski.

The focus of this study is a comparative analysis of the conceptual metaphors and idioms used in the Disney animated movie Elemental (2023) to construct a fictional world centered on the elements, their anthropomorphization, and the interactions between them – primarily fire and water. The aim of this thesis is to determine how translators approach the translation of metaphors and idioms in dubbing and to what extent the “elemental” mapping has been preserved in the target language. The first chapter focuses on the specific nature of dubbing as an audiovisual translation and the limitations that dubbing requires. The second chapter focuses on explaining the concepts of conceptual metaphor theory, metaphors, idioms, and translation techniques for these linguistic devices. The third chapter is an analysis of the collected rhetorical figures, conducted based on translation techniques for metaphors and idioms. The fourth chapter presents the results of the analysis and the conclusions drawn from it.
