Talismán de Remedios Varo y "Amuleto" de Roberto Bolaño. Lectura simultánea

Remedios Varo’s talisman and Roberto Bolaño’s Amulet. A simultaneous reading This essay constitutes a new approach to the art of Remedios Varo, mediated by Roberto Bolaño’s novel Amulet. The juxtaposition of her works with the text reveals the melancholic and sinister side of her personal style. At the same time, the context of Varo’s paintings seems indispensable for the analysis of one of the central images of Amulet: the mysterious valley of the dead. This essay foregrounds the similarities between the artistic endeavours of Bolaño and Varo. The text and paintings examined seem to complement each other. Their simultaneous interpretation consists of an analysis of the surrealist techniques (concerning the concepts of time, madness and prophetic visions) used by the both artists and a description of the images that seem to emerge from the connection between them.
