The essay deals with the issues related to area studies in Central Europe. Special attention is paid to the problems of cultural memory, as well as the issue of a Central European person as a special mental type (Homo Europae Centralis), which is considered in three aspects: 1) historical, 2) intellectual and 3) institutional (problematics of the journal "Central Europe", published in Prague since 1927 to 1938).
