No Canadian girl is called Ania. Foreignization and Domestication on the Basis of Polish Translations of L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables

Celem pracy jest analiza i porównanie dwóch polskich tłumaczeń powieści Lucy Maud Montgomery Anne of Green Gables, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem użytych w tym celu strategii tłumaczeniowych, jakimi są egzotyzacja i domestykacja. Praca składa się z dwóch części: teoretycznej oraz praktycznej. W części teoretycznej pracy przedstawiono definicje tłumaczenia, wybrane koncepcje dotyczące tłumaczeń, opracowane przez czołowych lingwistów, strategie i techniki tłumaczeniowe, granice przekładalności, przekład literacki oraz przekład polemiczny i kanoniczny. Część praktyczna skupia się na porównaniu i analizie konkretnych decyzji tłumaczeniowych, podjętych przez Agnieszkę Kuc w tłumaczeniu Ania z Zielonego Wzgórza z 2012 roku oraz przez Annę Bańkowską w tłumaczeniu Anne z Zielonych Szczytów z 2022 roku. Analiza obejmuje podejście do tytułu powieści, imienia głównej bohaterki oraz pozostałych bohaterów, a także nazw miejsc geograficznych występujących w książce. Wyniki przeprowadzonej analizy pozwoliły wskazać, w jakim stopniu wyegzotyzowane są oba tłumaczenia, jak konsekwentne były działania obu tłumaczek i jak ich działania wpłynęły na odbiór tekstu. Bazując na przeprowadzonych badaniach w formie porównania i analizy treści, można wnioskować, że użycie danej strategii tłumaczeniowej ma znaczny wpływ na odbiór i klarowność tekstu. W zależności od obranej strategii tłumacz*ka jest w stanie ubogacić tekst o wartości kulturowe bądź tych wartości tekst pozbawić. Praca podkreśla istotę doboru i konsekwentności w wyborze i użyciu strategii tłumaczeniowych oraz jej wpływ na odbiór i wartość kulturową tekstu.

The aim of this thesis is critical analysis and comparison of two Polish translations of Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel Anne of Green Gables, with particular emphasis on the used translation strategies, i.e. exoticization and domestication. The thesis consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part of the thesis discuses the knowledge necessary to undertake analysis and comparison and provides context. Topics covered include: the definition of translation, various approaches to the topic of translation represented by leading linguists, translation strategies and techniques, the limits of translatability, literary translation, and polemical and canonical translation. The practical part focuses on the comparison and analysis of specific translation decisions made by Agnieszka Kuc in the 2012 translation of Ania z Zielonego Wzgórza and by Anna Bańkowska in the 2022 translation of Anne z Zielonych Szczytów. The analysis includes the approach to the title of the novel, the name of the main character and other characters, as well as the names of geographical places appearing in the book. The results of the analysis allowed us to indicate the extent to which both translations were exoticized, how consistent the actions of both translators were and how their actions influenced the reception of the text. Based on the research conducted in the form of comparison and content analysis, it can be concluded that the use of a given translation strategy has a significant impact on the reception and clarity of the text. Depending on the chosen strategy, the translator is able to enrich the text with cultural values or, conversely, deprive the text of these values. The work emphasizes the importance of selection and consistency in the selection and use of translation strategies and its impact on the reception and cultural value of the text.
