Niniejsza praca analizuje sposoby konstruowania figury terrorysty w brytyjskim dyskursie prasowym w latach 1974-2023. Poprzez dobór kontekstów, języka i sposobów przedstawiania sprawców, media współtworzą społeczne wyobrażenia o terroryzmie.

Abstrakt (EN)

This thesis analyses the ways in which the figure of the terrorist is constructed in British press discourse between 1974 and 2023. It proceeds from the assumption that “terrorism” is not a neutral descriptive category, but rather a political label and an instrument of power used to define threats and to draw boundaries between the community and the “Other”. An analysis of articles published in „The Times” and „The Guardian” concerning attacks carried out by PIRA, al-Qaeda and Hamas demonstrates that the media do not merely report on violence, but also assign meaning to it. Through the selection of contexts, language and modes of representing perpetrators, the media contribute to shaping social perceptions of terrorism.
