Joseph Malègue dans l’histoire littéraire et religieuse de son temps. De la pensée à l’écriture

Niniejsze studium ma na celu analizę dialektyki pomiędzy myślą a twórczością francuskiego intelektualisty i pisarza Josepha Malègue’a (1876-1940) w odniesieniu do literackiej i religijnej historii jego czasów. Stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na podwójne pytanie badawcze: w jaki sposób myśl i twórczość Malègue’a sytuują się na literackim, filozoficznym, teologicznym i estetycznym tle współczesnej mu epoki?; jak przedstawia się wewnętrzny intelektualny świat autora?; jakie lektury stanowiły pożywkę dla jego twórczości? Po drugie zaś: jak można zdefiniować jego estetykę i poetykę, jakie formy obiera wyobraźnia literacka twórcy? Podział książki odzwierciedla tę podwójną problematykę: jej pierwsza część dotyczy historii idei, druga estetyki. Punkt wyjścia dociekań stanowi myśl Malègue’a, zaś ich zwieńczenie: studium jego wyobraźni literackiej i stylu, odnajdującego się na granicy realizmu, impresjonizmu i symbolizmu, co tworzy oryginalny wariant realizmu mistycznego. W pracy analizowane są nawiązania twórczości Malègue’a do dzieł wielu myślicieli i pisarzy jego czasów: m.in. H. Bergsona, M. Blondela, H. Bremonda, W. Jamesa, M. Prousta, G. Bernanosa czy F. Mauriaka. Tym samym, zarówno myśl, jak i twórczość Malègue’a zostają dogłębnie zinterpretowane w stosunku do licznych tradycji literackich i estetycznych, a także w odniesieniu do debat filozoficznych oraz teologicznych jego czasów. Badania obejmują analizę całości jego pism, także tych dotąd niepublikowanych: sztuk teatralnych, licznych zapisków i notatek, dzienników i niewydanej korespondencji, pomijanych aż do tej pory przez krytyków, skupionych na pierwszej powieści Malègue’a: Augustyn, albo Pan jest tu.

This monograph aims to highlight the dialectics between the thought and œuvre of the writer and intellectual Joseph Malègue (1876-1940) in relation to the literary and religious history of his time. It is based on a twofold inquiry: how are Malègue’s thought and œuvre situated in the literary, philosophical, theological and aesthetic scenes of his time?; what is his intellectual universe, what readings and authors was he inspired by? And secondly: how does his literary imagination unfold and how can we define his aesthetics and poetics? Bearing in mind this double investigation, the study is divided into two parts: the first one situated in the field of intellectual history and the second in the field of aesthetics. The analysis departs from Malègue’s thought and reaches its acme with the study of his imagination and his style, placed at the crossroads of realism, impressionism and symbolism, for Malègue creates an original variant of spiritual realism. The monograph offers an in-depth analysis of the affinities, disparities and echoes between Malègue’s literary and intellectual production and the rich panorama of intellectuals and writers who nourished it: Bergson, Blondel, Bremond, James, Proust, Bernanos, Mauriac and many others. It positions both Malègue’s thought and œuvre, inseparably interconnected by a series of leitmotivs, within numerous literary and aesthetic traditions, as well as in relation to the philosophical and theological debates of his time. This research examines the totality of his writings, including unpublished pieces: numerous notebooks, notes and correspondence, neglected by academics and critics who focused mainly on studying his first novel.

Cette étude vise à mettre en valeur la dialectique de la pensée et de l’œuvre de l’écrivain et intellectuel Joseph Malègue (1876-1940) par rapport à l’histoire littéraire et religieuse de son temps, à partir d’un double questionnement : où sa pensée et son œuvre se situent-elles sur les scènes littéraire, philosophique, théologique et esthétique de son époque, quel est son univers intérieur secret, de quelles lectures se nourrissait-il ? Et deuxièmement : comment son imaginaire littéraire se déploie-t-il, quelle est son esthétique et sa poétique ? Le travail se divise en deux parties, l’une relevant de l’histoire intellectuelle et l’autre du domaine de l’esthétique : le cheminement proposé part de la pensée de Malègue pour aboutir aux questions de son imaginaire et de son style au carrefour du réalisme, de l’impressionnisme et du symbolisme : une variante originale du réalisme spirituel. Nous mettons en lumière les affinités, les échos et des écarts entre sa production littéraire et le riche panorama des penseurs et des écrivains de son époque qui l’ont nourrie : H. Bergson, M. Blondel, H. Bremond, W. James, M. Proust, G. Bernanos, F. Mauriac et beaucoup d’autres, en situant tant la pensée que l’œuvre maléguiennes, inséparablement liées d’une série des leitmotivs, dans de nombreuses traditions littéraires et esthétiques, ainsi que par rapport aux débats philosophiques et théologiques de son temps. Nos recherches englobent l’analyse de la totalité de ses écrits, y compris les inédits : de nombreux carnets, notes inédites et la correspondance – ce que la critique, toute concentrée sur son premier roman, a négligé jusqu’à maintenant.
