Pre-Roman Settlements in the Hinterland of Novae in Lower Moesia: a re-assessment of the displacements of the conquered tribes by the Romans

Uproszczony widok
A question on pre-Roman settlement in the central part of the lower Danubian lands remains still unsolved. The number of hand-formed pottery sherds discovered in the 1st-century layers of the legionary camp at Novae is quite intriguing, since the local settlement in the broader area between the Osum and Yantra rivers is not well attested. According to coin finds pre-Roman settlement seem to collapse in the 80s of the 1st century BC. The finds of pottery made in local tradition discovered in the layers and pits dated as late as to the Flavian period may indicate that small-scale displacements of people living on the northern bank of the Danube were possible also somewhere near Novae.
