Strategies for neg-politeness: an analysis of directives in ITV’s

dc.abstract.enThis thesis explores how members of the aristocracy and the working class formulate directives, taking into consideration gender differences. The first part delves into the concept of politeness, explaining both its colloquial understanding and the reasons why it can be viewed negatively. It also distinguishes between the everyday understanding and the technical use of the term in linguistics. Additionally, the thesis draws on Penelope Brown and Robert Levinson's Theory of Politeness, focusing on the concept of face and face-threatening acts (FTAs). Moreover, it provides a detailed outline of Leech's Politeness Model and discusses the lexico-grammatical structures used to create directives. The second part of the thesis presents a quantitative analysis of the characters' preferences for negative politeness strategies in the series ‘Downton Abbey’. The study reveals that the choice of strategy is highly dependent on context, particularly the relationship between S and O, the purpose of the conversation, and O’s degree of obligation to perform the directive. These factors are more influential than class affiliation, gender, and the lexico-grammatical form of the directive, significantly impacting the perceived politeness of an interaction.
dc.abstract.plNiniejsza praca bada różnice w formułowaniu dyrektyw przez przedstawicieli arystokracji i klasy robotniczej, z uwzględnieniem podziału na płeć. Część pierwsza skupia się na omówieniu zagadnienia uprzejmości. Przedstawia potoczne rozumienie tego zjawiska oraz wyjaśnia dlaczego bywa ono oceniane negatywnie. Wprowadza także rozróżnienie pomiędzy codziennym, a specjalistycznym użyciem tego terminu w językoznawstwie. Ponadto, praca odwołuje się do teorii grzeczności Penelope Brown i Roberta Levinsona, a w szczególności do pojęcia ,,twarzy” oraz aktów mowy jej zagrażających. W dalszej części koncentruje się na szczegółowym przedstawieniu modelu uprzejmości Leecha oraz omówieniu struktur leksykalno-gramatycznych wykorzystywanych przy tworzeniu dyrektyw. Drugą część pracy stanowi analiza ilościowa, która prezentuje preferencje bohaterów serialu ,,Downton Abbey” w wyborze strategii należących do uprzejmości negatywnej. Wyniki badań wykazały, że wybór odpowiedniej strategii jest silnie uzależniony od kontekstu, a w szczególności od relacji między nadawcą a odbiorcą, celu konwersacji oraz stopnia zobowiązania do wykonania dyrektywy przez odbiorcę. Czynniki te są istotniejsze niż przynależność klasowa, płeć oraz forma leksykalno-gramatyczna dyrektywy i mają największy wpływ na ocenę poziomu uprzejmości danej interakcji.
