Mifsas Baḥri (Tigray, Ethiopia) 2013-2016. The southernmost outpost of the Aksumite polity in the greater Red Sea trade network

Mifsas Baḥri is the southernmost Late Aksumite (c. 550 - c. 700 CE) site known, and lies in Tigray province, in Ethiopia’s northern-most region. It is located in the southern part of Tigray, lying on the western shore of Lake Ḥashenge. The Mifsas Baḥri archaeological site consists of exposed and scattered materials and still buried remains of an ancient church. All around the main site, MB001, lie small sites. We propose the existence of a settlement area in which the church was embedded. Generally this site is known owing to its stone sculpture.
