Modernizing a Classic. An Analysis of Three 21st-Century Polish Translations of Anne of Green Gables

dc.abstract.enThis paper presents an analysis of three 21st century Polish translations of the novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, i.e. by Paweł Beręsewicz (2013), Maria Borzobohata-Sawicka (2021) and Anna Bańkowska (2022). The work presents translational concepts such as foreignization and domestication; functional approaches such as skopostheorie; concepts of equivalence and translational loyalty, and analyzes the literary polysystem and the position of children's literature within it. In addition, the work also introduces the concept of translation series and briefly analyzes the first influential translation of the novel. Chapter three of the work focuses on the linguistic and cultural analysis of three selected translations, while chapter four analyzes the use of paratext by three different translators. The central aim of this paper is to compare the differences and similarities of the three translations in terms of language and culture and to answer the question how modernization manifests in the translation of classical literature.
dc.abstract.plNiniejsza praca przedstawia analizę trzech polskich tłumaczeń powieści Anne of Green Gables autorstwa Lucy Maud Montgomery, powstałych w XXI wieku, tj. Pawła Beręsewicza (2013), Marii Borzobohatej-Sawickiej (2021) oraz Anny Bańkowskiej (2022). Praca przedstawia koncepcje translatoryczne, takie jak egzotyzacja i udomowienie, podejścia funkcjonalne, jak skopostheorie, koncepcje ekwiwalencji i lojalności tłumaczeniowej, a także analizuje polisystem literacki i pozycję literatury dziecięcej w jego ramach. Dodatkowo, praca przedstawia również pojęcie serii tłumaczeniowej oraz pokrótce analizuje pierwsze wpływowe tłumaczenie powieści. Rozdział trzeci pracy poświęcony jest analizie językowej oraz kulturowej trzech wybranych tłumaczeń, natomiast rozdział czwarty analizuje użycie paratekstu poprzez poszczególnych tłumaczy. Centralnym celem niniejszej pracy jest porównanie różnic oraz podobieństw trzech tłumaczeń pod względem językowym oraz kulturowym, prowadzące do odpowiedzi na pytanie w czym wyraża się modernizacja w tłumaczeniu klasyki.
