| dc.abstract.en | This chaptere article is devoted to the role of corpus data in lexicography. It has been written in conjunction with the planning of a dictionary of Russian-Polish lexical parallels. It discusses the possibilities for and methods of using corpora, particularly parallel ones, in the development of the planned dictionary. The corpus-based tools taken into consideration are, in essence, two parallel corpora of Russian and Polish: The Russian National Corpus and The Polish-Russian Parallel Corpus of the University of Warsaw. The aim of thise chapterarticle is to show that limiting the resource base to the existing mono- and bilingual dictionaries is not a guarantee that a genuinely contemporary and useful lexicographic work of the designed type will be created. Only reference to corpus data assures a formally justifiable selection of the framework (i.e. of the entries), the choice of the meanings and decisions regarding their hierarchy, as well as the selection of illustrative material and translation equivalents – both basic and supplementary. A combined search (available only in The Polish-Russian Parallel Corpus of the University of Warsaw), which allows imposition of criteria on both the original and the translated texts simultaneously, proves to be a particularly useful functionality for the study of lexical parallels. The article publication also analyses certain limitations of corpus-based tools for the development of the dictionary. |
