Niezwykła historia doktora Jamesa Barry'ego

Uproszczony widok
Article is devoted to the life of dr James Miranda Barry, one of the most mysterious figures in the history of British medicine. Born at the end of the 18th century he was an excellent surgeon, a dedicated reformer and pioneer of preventive medicine as well as an expert on tropical diseases. He was notorious for questioning the military authorities and disagreeing with their orders. Only after he died it turned out that James Miranda Barry was a woman or a hermaphrodite, born as Margaret Ann Bulkley. The paper aims at finding the reasons why Margaret Ann Bulkley decided to create a new identity and operate in such masculinized environment as the early 19th century British army.
