Machine-translated literature from English into Polish on the example of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll

dc.abstract.enThe aim of this work is to compare the quality of literary translation with machine translation. The research has been conducted on the novel of Lewis Carroll “Alice in Wonderland” and focuses on errors and inaccuracies committed by the translating parties. The work begins with a presentation of the history, characteristics and general assumptions of literary and machine translation, where selected machine translation platforms are described in subchapters. Then, classifications of translation errors and inaccuracies are presented. The methodological chapter contains tools for analyzing the study: Słomczyński’s translation from 1972 is a model of literary translation, while the platforms used in machine translation are Google Translate, DeepL and ChatGPT. The texts translated into Polish are analyzed in terms of the translation of rhymes, proper names and linguistic elements. Next chapter presents the results of translations obtained using machine translation tools. Automation of the translation process can speed up the work of a literary translator or be an inspiration for translating proper names, however the lack of consistency in the translation reduces the quality of the resulting text. In the case of punctuation and spelling, there are numerous omissions and oversights made by machines. In addition, machine translation is incapable of adequately translating rhymes. On this basis, it can be concluded that machine translation is not able to replace literary translation.
dc.abstract.plCelem niniejszej pracy jest porównanie jakości tłumaczenia literackiego i tłumaczenia maszynowego na podstawie powieści Lewisa Carrolla „Alicja w Krainie Czarów” w oparciu o błędy i nieścisłości popełniane przez strony tłumaczące. Pracę rozpoczyna przedstawienie historii, charakterystyki i ogólnych założeń tłumaczenia literackiego oraz maszynowego, gdzie w podrozdziałach zostały opisane wybrane platformy tłumaczeń maszynowych. Następnie zaprezentowano klasyfikacje błędów i nieścisłości tłumaczeniowych. W rozdziale metodologicznym zawarte są narzędzia służące analizie badania: tłumaczenie Słomczyńskiego z 1972 r. stanowi wzór tłumaczenia literackiego, natomiast użyte w tłumaczeniu maszynowym platformy to Google Translate, DeepL oraz ChatGPT. Przetłumaczone na język polski teksty zostały przeanalizowane pod kątem przekładu rymów, nazw własnych oraz elementów językowych, które zostały opisane w rozdziale czwartym. Rozdział piąty przedstawia wyniki tłumaczeń uzyskanych za pomocą narzędzi tłumaczeń maszynowych. Automatyzacja procesu tłumaczeniowego może przyspieszyć pracę tłumacza literackiego lub stanowić inspirację przy tłumaczeniu nazw własnych, jednakże brak zachowanej spójności tłumaczenia obniża jakość otrzymanego tekstu. W przypadku interpunkcji i ortografii dochodzi do licznych pominięć i przeoczeń dokonywanych przez maszyny. Tłumaczenie maszynowe jest również niezdolne do adekwatnego przełożenia rymów. Na tej podstawie można stwierdzić, że tłumaczenie maszynowe nie jest w stanie zastąpić tłumaczenia literackiego.
