Intertextuality in literary translation on the example of the translation of “Far from the Madding Crowd” by Thomas Hardy from English into Polish and German

dc.abstract.enThe aim of the present thesis is to study the issue of intertextuality in literary translation on the example of the translation of Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy from English into Polish and German. In the theoretical part, the subject of intertextuality has been addressed (origins and definition of the phenomenon, typologies, functions that intertextuality fulfils in literature) as well as the subject of intertextuality in translation (intertextual relations in translation, translatability of intertextuality, the role of the translator, translation strategies and translation techniques). The next part of the thesis contains the analysis of translation of intertextual markers in the Polish and German translation of Far from the Madding Crowd, organised in three thematic groups: biblical intertextual markers, mythological intertextual markers and intertextual markers relating to English literature. In the framework of the analysis, it has been concluded that while neither of the translators seems to apply one strategy consistently in all cases, it can be observed that the Polish translator tends towards foreignization, whereas the German translator seems to aim at neutralisation. No unequivocal correlation between foreignization and explicitation has been found. However, the relationship between the explicitness of an intertextual marker and its translatability has been observed.
dc.abstract.plCelem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie zagadnienia intertekstualności w przekładzie literackim na przykładzie tłumaczenia powieści Hardy’ego Far from the Madding Crowd z języka angielskiego na języki polski i niemiecki. W części teoretycznej podjęto temat intertekstualności (geneza i definicja zjawiska, typologie, funkcje, jakie intertekstualność pełni w literaturze) oraz temat intertekstualności w przekładzie (relacje intertekstualne w przekładzie, przekładalność intertekstualności, rola tłumacza, strategie i techniki tłumaczeniowe). Kolejna część pracy zawiera analizę przekładu wskaźników nawiązania intertekstualnego w polskim i niemieckim przekładzie Far from the Madding Crowd, uporządkowanych w trzech grupach tematycznych: biblijne wskaźniki nawiązania intertekstualnego, mitologiczne wskaźniki nawiązania intertekstualnego oraz wskaźniki nawiązania intertekstualnego odnoszące się do literatury angielskiej. W ramach przeprowadzonej analizy stwierdzono, że choć żaden z tłumaczy nie wydaje się stosować jednej strategii konsekwentnie we wszystkich przypadkach, można zaobserwować, że polski tłumacz skłania się ku egzotyzacji, podczas gdy tłumacz niemiecki wydaje się dążyć do neutralizacji. Nie znaleziono jednoznacznej korelacji między obcością a eksplicytnością. Zaobserwowano jednak zależność między jawnością markera intertekstualnego a jego przekładalnością.
