dc.abstract.enThe Depiction of the Birth of the United States of America and the Death of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Memoirs of Philip Mazzei. A hero crucial to the fragile Italian American identity, a friend to several future U.S. presidents, himself considered America’s forgotten founding father, Filippo Mazzei constitutes an unexpected Italian link between the history of the American War of Independence and the partitions of Poland-Lithuania in the late 18th century. As an outsider eyewitness of three revolutions (American, French and Polish) he provides interesting insights into the sources of American triumph and Polish-Lithuanian catastrophe.
