Analysis of Translations of Fantasy Terms into Polish in the subtitled version of a British Series A Discovery of Witches

dc.abstract.enThe following thesis aims to analyze the translation strategies used in the translation of fantasy terms in the British fantasy series ‘A Discovery of Witches’. The subject of the analysis is Polish subtitles and the original English soundtrack is used as a reference. The paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter of the work focuses on translation and its types: audiovisual translation, subtitling, dubbing and voiceover. The paper also discusses the significant role of translation as a bridge between cultures, emphasizing the importance of knowing the behavioral patterns and customs of the source and target language communities. The second chapter of the work is an attempt to explain the relationship between translation and culture, as well as an outline of the most popular translation strategies, and the factors determining their choice. In addition, the influence of culture on a language and how a language becomes a tool of culture are described. The third chapter of the work – the practical part – is the analysis of translations of selected examples of fantasy terms, spells, proper names and marriage vows from the series. The examples presented illustrate how many factors affect the translation process and how complicated the process can be.
dc.abstract.plNiniejsza praca ma na celu zanalizowanie strategii tłumaczeniowych użytych podczas tłumaczenia pojęć fantastycznych w brytyjskim serialu fantasy „Księga Czarownic”. Przedmiotem analizy są polskie napisy, a jako punkt odniesienia przyjęto oryginalną anglojęzyczną ścieżkę dźwiękową. Praca została podzielona na trzy części. Pierwsza część pracy skupia się na tłumaczeniu oraz jego rodzajach: tłumaczenie audiowizualne, napisy, dubbing oraz lektor. W tekście omówiono również istotną rolę tłumaczenia jako mostu pomiędzy kulturami, podkreślając znaczenie znajomości wzorców postępowania i zwyczajów społeczności języka źródłowego i docelowego. Druga część pracy to próba ukazania związków pomiędzy tłumaczeniem a kulturą, a także przedstawienia najpopularniejszych strategii tłumaczeniowych i czynników determinujących ich wybór. Dodatkowo opisany został wpływ kultury na język oraz sposób, w jaki język staje się narzędziem kultury. Część trzecia pracy to część praktyczna, tj. analiza tłumaczeń wybranych przykładów terminów fantastycznych, zaklęć, nazw własnych i serialowej przysięgi małżeńskiej. Przedstawione przykłady ilustrują, jak wiele czynników wpływa na proces tłumaczenia oraz jak skomplikowany może on być.
