International organizations' activities towards human rights violations in the fashion industry: prospects and challenges

dc.abstract.enThe aim of the following undergraduate thesis is to focus on the activities of international organizations in the context of human rights violations in the fashion industry, with a particular focus on the prospects and challenges of improving working conditions in the sector. The issues raised in one of the largest sectors of the economy are exploitation of workers, lack of adequate and safe working conditions, child labor, discrimination, and unfair wages. The efforts of a number of international organizations with specific reference to the International Labor Organization, the Ethical Trading Initiative, and the United Nations body, the Human Rights Council to counter these problems are analyzed. The paper covers the background of the problem with a history and in-depth discussion of the problem. Furthermore, analyzed is the case of the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013, which exposed systemic failures in occupational safety. It became the impetus for reforms, so the work analyzes the implementation of new standards. It highlights successes as well as challenges, such as the lack of effective control mechanisms, limited financial resources of organizations, and resistance from local authorities and businesses.
dc.abstract.plCelem poniższej pracy licencjackiej jest skupienie się na działalności organizacji międzynarodowych w kontekście łamania praw człowieka w branży modowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem perspektyw i wyzwań związanych z poprawą warunków pracy w tym sektorze. Kwestie podnoszone w jednym z największych sektorów gospodarki to wyzysk pracowników, brak odpowiednich i bezpiecznych warunków pracy, praca dzieci, dyskryminacja i niesprawiedliwe płace. Przeanalizowano wysiłki szeregu organizacji międzynarodowych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Międzynarodowej Organizacji Pracy, Inicjatywy Etycznego Handlu oraz organu ONZ, Rady Praw Człowieka, mające na celu przeciwdziałanie tym problemom. W pracy przedstawiono tło problemu wraz z jego historią i dogłębnym omówieniem. Ponadto przeanalizowano przypadek katastrofy w Rana Plaza w 2013 r., która ujawniła systemowe błędy w zakresie bezpieczeństwa pracy. Stała się ona impulsem do reform, dlatego w pracy przeanalizowano wdrażanie nowych standardów. Podkreślono zarówno sukcesy, jak i wyzwania, takie jak brak skutecznych mechanizmów kontroli, ograniczone zasoby finansowe organizacji oraz opór ze strony władz lokalnych i przedsiębiorstw.
