A comparison of politicians’ statements made at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26 in terms of textual evaluation

Celem niniejszej pracy jest porównanie pod względem wartościowania w tekście wystąpień siedmiu polityków, którzy przemawiali podczas szczytu klimatycznego COP26, który odbył się na przełomie października i listopada 2021 roku w Glasgow. Kryterium wyboru polityków był fakt, iż każdy z nich reprezentował kraj, w którym angielski jest jednym z języków urzędowych. Analiza przemówień została przeprowadzona na podstawie teorii wartościowania opracowanej w 2019 roku przez badaczki M.Bednarek i H.Caple. W części teoretycznej pracy skupiono się na przedstawieniu kilku pojęć z zakresu analizy dyskursu, dyskursu politycznego oraz ekologicznego, jak również przedstawieniu wcześniej wspomnianej teorii opisanej przez Bednarek i Caple. W części analitycznej przedstawiono wyniki badania przemówień każdego z siedmiu polityków w formie tabelarycznej. W siedmiu tabelach zaprezentowano przykłady z poszczególnych parametrów, dzięki czemu możliwe było porównanie parametrów między sobą i zestawienie otrzymanych wyników z wcześniej postawioną hipotezą. Wyniki badania okazały się być sprzeczne ze sformułowanymi założeniami.

The objective of this paper is to compare in terms of textual evaluation the speeches of seven politicians who were speaking at the COP26 climate summit that was held in Glasgow at the end of October/early November 2021. The selection criterion for the politicians was that each of them represented a country where English is one of the official languages. The analysis of the speeches was based on the theory of evaluation written by M. Bednarek and H. Caple in 2019. The theoretical part of this paper focuses on introducing a number of concepts related to discourse analysis, political discourse and ecological discourse, as well as outlining the aforementioned theory written by Bednarek and Caple. The analytical part of this paper focuses on presenting the study results of the speeches made by each of the seven politicians in the tabular form. In seven tables, instances from each parameter were presented making it possible to compare the parameters with one another as well as to compare the final data with the previously formulated hypothesis. The findings of the study proved to be contrary to the above-mentioned hypothesis.
