Mythologization and Christian elements in C. S. Lewis’s selected novels. A critical analysis of an individual author’s style

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie na podstawie trzech wybranych powieści C.S. Lewisa, wykorzystania motywów chrześcijańskich i mitologicznych jako elementów składających się na indywidualny styl autorski. W tym celu w pracy przeprowadzona została krytyczna analiza zawierających powyższe motywy fragmentów powieści „Lew, czarownica i stara szafa”, „Siostrzeniec czarodzieja” i „Dopóki mamy twarze”, oraz używanych w nich przez autora odpowiednich środków stylistycznych i językowych. Pierwszy rozdział wprowadza ramy teoretyczne i rozpoczyna się od przybliżenia teorii strukturalistycznych, mitograficznych oraz archetypowych, stanowiących podstawę późniejszej analizy. Następnie przedstawiono szczegółową charakterystykę języka biblijnego na podstawie przekładu Biblii Króla Jakuba, opis języka figuratywnego i indywidualnego stylu autorskiego Lewisa oraz krótką biografię pisarza. Drugi rozdział stanowi analizę krytyczną powtarzających się wzorów i elementów nawiązujących do chrześcijaństwa oraz mitów, widocznych w wybranych fragmentach powieści, a także analizę języka i składni wybranych fragmentów. Wykazuje ona, że na indywidualny styl autorski C.S. Lewisa składają się zarówno intertekstualne motywy, jak i elementy językowe.

The aim of this thesis is to present on the example of three selected novels by C.S. Lewis the use of Christian and mythological themes as elements of his individual writing style. For that purpose, the critical analysis is performed on the fragments from the novels ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ and ‘Till We Have Faces’, containing such elements as well as utilized specific literary devices and linguistic forms. The first chapter of the thesis provides the theoretical framework and begins with presenting the structuralist and archetypal theoretical perspectives that constitute the foundation for the subsequent analysis. Then, the description of distinctive Biblical style present in King James Version, the use of figurative language, and the author’s individual writing style are provided, as well as short biographical information on C.S. Lewis. The second chapter of the thesis is the critical analysis of the elements and recurring patterns referring to Christianity and myths in the selected passages from Lewis’s novels as well as the language and syntax used by the author in selected fragments. Such analysis proves that C.S. Lewis’s individual style consists of both the intertextual themes that occur in the novels as well as the linguistic elements.
