Developing cultural awareness in the EFL classroom through the educative role of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

Praca dyplomowa składa się z dwóch części. Część pierwsza ma charakter teoretyczny i jest poświęcona zdefiniowaniu pojęcia „kultura” oraz rozwijaniu świadomości kulturowej poprzez użycie tekstów literackich w szkole podstawowej na pierwszym etapie edukacyjnym na zajęciach języka angielskiego jako języka obcego. Część druga ma charakter praktyczny i zawiera trzy scenariusze lekcji wraz z materiałami dydaktycznymi. Cele ogólne i szczegółowe wraz z opisem rozwiązań zadań dydaktycznych zostały opracowane na początku pracy dyplomowej. W pierwszej części koncentruję się na omówieniu kulturowego kontekstu czytelnictwa i jego znaczenia we współczesnej edukacji. Następnie przedstawiam wpływ książki “O czym szumią wierzby” Kennetha Grahame’a na edukację dzieci. Część praktyczna opiera się na opisie zastosowania dydaktycznie dostosowanej wersji dzieła Grahame’a w klasie języka angielskiego. Składa się również z sytuacji dydaktycznej, koncepcji i profilu klasy, które zostały scharakteryzowane. Praca dyplomowa kończy się końcowym podsumowaniem. Wszystkie pomoce dydaktyczne i materiały potrzebne do przeprowadzenia lekcji znajdują się w załączniku na końcu pracy.

The Diploma Project is divided into two parts. The first is analytical and devoted to the development of cultural awareness through literary texts during English lessons at the first stage of primary school. The second part is practical and it contains three lesson plans with learning resources. General and particular aims with a description of solutions for didactic assignments are elaborated at the beginning of the Diploma Project. In the first part, I concentrate on discussing the cultural context of readership and its meaning in contemporary education. Afterwards, I present the influence of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame on children’s education. The practical part focuses particularly on didactic methods of three scenarios of lessons with a cultural component. It also consists of a didactic situation, concepts and a class profile which are described. The Diploma Project ends with the Final Conclusion. Every didactic aid and material needed in my classes is at the end of the thesis, in the Appendix.
