| dc.abstract.en | The dissertation concerns some crucial aspects of women’s reading on the Polish territories in 19th century. The primary aim is to reveal what kind of connections there were between women’s reading and processes of upbringing, education and emancipation of women. If we analyse the reading not only as one of many aspects of a social life, but also as an idea moulding social awareness, it turns out to be a phenomenon which shaped the nineteenth-century reality. I concentrated above all on reconstructing projects and beliefs about women’s reading, which were expressed in the years from 1864 to 1905 in the most popular periodicals, in scientific and popular studies and even in novels. In various statements articulated by the feature and fiction writers there could be found many reflections of the common notions of women’s standing and of the typical expectations concerning feminine behaviour, women’s reading among others. Simultaneously, these statements had to serve transformation of social ideas of women’s role from upper and middle classes. The work consists of four chapters. In the first chapter I discuss the culture context of women reading. In the second – I attempt to reconstruct ideas and projects of women’s reading which influenced most the Polish social life. Looking for the reasons of a “dangerous symbiosis”, as I called a kind of connections between the reading women’s attitude and the rise of the novel in 19th century, in the third chapter I consider various relations existing between the reading women and the novel. The dissertation is concluded with a chapter containing some important reading women’s testimonies. These confessions lead to the conclusion that, above all, although not all reading women became suffragettes, without reading women any emancipation would not be possible. |
| dc.abstract.pl | Głównym celem rozprawy jest odtworzenie projektów i przekonań dotyczących lektury kobiet na ziemiach polskich, formułowanych i upowszechnianych w przestrzeni publicznej (przede wszystkim za pośrednictwem czasopism społeczno-kulturalnych, wydawnictw naukowych, poradników oraz beletrystyki) w latach 1864–1905. Wyobrażenia liderów opinii na temat kobiecego czytelnictwa okazały się bowiem w dużym stopniu determinujące nie tylko dla dyskursu pro- i antyemancypacyjnego, a tym samym dla kierunku przeobrażeń społeczno-kulturowych, ale również dla samoświadomości czytelniczek. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy ukazuje kulturowe konteksty czytelnictwa kobiet. W drugim zostały opisane normy lektury wyznaczane przez autorytety reprezentujące poglądy tradycjonalistyczne i liberalne oraz efekty ich działań normotwórczych. Rozdział trzeci stanowi próbę uporządkowania relacji zachodzących między dziewiętnastowiecznymi czytelniczkami a powieścią jako najpopularniejszym wśród kobiet gatunkiem literackim. W zamykającym rozprawę rozdziale czwartym usystematyzowano i omówiono odpowiedzi kobiet na dwie ważne ankiety, pokazujące bezpośrednie zależności między kobiecą lekturą a kształtowaniem postaw życiowych i realizacją postulatów formułowanych przez środowiska opiniotwórcze. |
