The impact of culture on language teaching - courtesy words in the Turkish language

dc.abstract.enTeaching a language is based not only on teaching vocabulary and grammar, but also on the transfer of cultural content. It is impossible to communicate in a language without knowing the rules of savoir-vivre valid in linguistic-cultural space. Therefore, an important factor in teaching a foreign language is to provide basic standards of linguistic behaviour. The best example of conformance to the rules in force in the language and culture is the ability to use courtesy words. The Turkish language, compared with Polish and other Slavic languages has both, a richness of forms, as well as the necessity to use them in appropriate situations and contexts. Starting from welcoming and introductions, which may not be limited only to a modest 'good morning', through expressing regret, requests and finishing with polite 'farewell' words. The verbal reaction used in a particular situation demonstrates both the mastery of knowing a given language, as well as the adaptation to the culture within which some forms are required. Especially the culture of a hierarchical society, as the Turkish society is a society of deeply embedded traditions of oral culture.
