Translating cultural references in Polish subtitles on the example of the Netflix series Emily in Paris

dc.abstract.enThe objective of this bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the translation of French cultural elements in the Polish subtitles of the American TV series “Emily in Paris” and to examine the compliance of the translation with Netflix guidelines. The first chapter discusses the challenges of audiovisual translation, followed by a focus on cultural references, their classification, and the translation strategies. The second chapter is dedicated to a comparative analysis of cultural references selected from the three seasons of the series, in the following categories: food and beverages, proper names, and others. The analysis showed that in most cases, the strategy of preserving cultural elements in their original form or with slight modifications to adapt to Polish orthography predominates. It was also observed that the Polish subtitles are mostly in line with Netflix guidelines, with only a few exceptions. The thesis also considers the potential impact that the translation may have on the viewer.
dc.abstract.plCelem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest analiza tłumaczenia francuskich elementów kulturowych obecnych w polskich napisach do amerykańskiego serialu „Emily w Paryżu” oraz sprawdzenie zgodności tłumaczenia z wytycznymi Netfliksa. W pierwszym rozdziale omówiono wyzwania przekładu audiowizualnego, a następnie skupiono się na odniesieniach kulturowych, ich klasyfikacji oraz strategiach tłumaczeniowych stosowanych w przekładzie. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest analizie porównawczej wybranych z trzech sezonów serialu odniesień kulturowych z następujących kategorii: żywność i napoje, nazwy własne, oraz inne. Analiza wykazała, że w większości przykładów przeważa strategia zachowywania elementów kulturowych w niezmienionej postaci lub z niewielkimi różnicami w celu dostosowania do polskiej ortografii. Okazało się również, że polskie napisy w większości są zgodne z wytycznymi Netfliksa, wyjątkiem są nieliczne przykłady. W pracy opisano również potencjalny wpływ, jaki tłumaczenie może mieć na widza.
