Warszawa oczami Anglików – porównanie relacji peregrynantów angielskich z XVII i XVIII wieku

dc.abstract.enEastern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries was not a destination for peregrinations or Grand Tours for the inhabitants of the western part of the continent. They came to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for various reasons – trade or diplomatic missions, or as a stopover on a longer journey. Authors from both eras highlight similar elements when describing the city. They are interested in practical matters such as the condition of the city's cobblestones or communal facilities, but also in the city's appearance – the look of the townsmen townhouses, the most beautiful noble palaces, or royal residences. There are also differences in the portrayal of Warsaw in the 17th and 18th centuries. 17th-century authors focus on providing as much practical information as possible, while the English writers of the next century depict the city more emotionally, focusing also on their personal feelings. Comparing sources from both centuries, one can notice that they present Warsaw as a city of contradictions – on one hand, the authors see the city as poorly built, ugly, and dirty, but on the other hand, they appreciate its elegance and beauty. By comparing the features of descriptions of Warsaw in English travel accounts, analyzing the similarities and differences in descriptions from the two eras, it can be observed that despite some changes in the nature of the city's description, the perception of Warsaw by peregrinators remains essentially unchanged.
dc.abstract.plEuropa Wschodnia w XVII i XVIII wieku nie była miejscem docelowym peregrynacji czy Grand Tour’ów dla mieszkańców zachodniej części tego kontynentu. Do Rzeczpospolitej trafiali oni z różnych pobudek – misji handlowych czy dyplomatycznych, albo jako przystanek na dłuższej trasie. Autorzy z obu epok zwracają uwagę na podobne elementy przy opisie miasta. Interesują ich tematy praktyczne, takie jak stan miejskich bruków czy urządzeń komunalnych, ale także sam widok miasta – wygląd mieszczańskich kamienic, najpiękniejsze magnackie pałace czy królewskie rezydencje. Istnieją też różnice w przedstawieniu Warszawy w wieku XVII i XVIII. Autorzy XVII-wieczni skupiają się na przedstawieniu jak największej ilości praktycznych informacji, a Anglicy z wieku następnego przedstawiają miasto bardziej emocjonalnie, skupiają się również na własnych odczuciach. Dokonując komparatystyki źródeł z obu stuleci można zauważyć, że przedstawiają one Warszawę, jako miasto sprzeczności – z jednej strony autorzy traktują miasto, jako źle zbudowane, brzydkie i brudne, a z drugiej doceniają jej elegancję i piękno. Porównując cechy składowe opisów Warszawy angielskich relacji z podróży, analizując podobieństwa i różnice opisów z dwóch epok spostrzec można, że mimo pewnych zmiennych w charakterze samej deskrypcji miasta, odbiór Warszawy przez peregrynantów pozostaje w samej swojej esencji niezmienny.
