Wczesne brytyjskie teksty o Sindzie a potrzeby administracyjne po podboju prowincji

dc.abstract.enThis paper examines the sources of British knowledge about Sindh published during the first decade after the province’s conquest, in the years 1843 and 1851. The analysis is prefaced by an outline of the region’s political history in the first half of the 19th century. Included are also biographical sketches of the authors of the sources. The main body of the paper analyzes British published texts with regard to their relevance for colonial administrators, comparing two distinct types of sources. Edward Thornton’s A Gazetteer of the Territories Adjacent to India on the North-West… is a geographical encyclopedia that encompasses the Sindh region. In contrast, Richard Burton’s Sindh and the Races That Inhabit the Valley of the Indus explores the ethnography and linguistics of the area. Both works discuss various facets of Sindh, ranging from the functioning of individual villages to broader social relations within the province. The objective of this paper is to highlight the similarities and differences in the authors’ approaches to Sindh and to analyze the nature of the information conveyed in their publications.
dc.abstract.plPraca omawia źródła wiedzy Brytyjczyków o Sindzie wydane w pierwszej dekadzie po podboju prowincji, a dokładnie w latach 1843 i 1851. Analizę poprzedza zarys historii politycznej regionu w pierwszej połowie XIX wieku. Przedstawione zostają również życiorysy autorów źródeł. Następnie przeprowadzona zostaje analiza brytyjskich tekstów publikowanych pod kątem ich przydatności dla administratorów kolonialnych. Przedmiotem porównań są dwa odmienne rodzaje źródeł. A gazetteer adjacent to India on the north-west autorstwa Edwarda Thorntona jest encyklopedią geograficzną, która uwzględnia tereny Sindhu. Praca Richarda Burtona Sindh and the Races that inhabit the Valley of the Indus to książka podejmująca tematykę etnograficzną i lingwistyczną regionu. Powyższe pozycje książkowe omawiają Sindh na różnych płaszczyznach, od funkcjonowania poszczególnych miejscowości po stosunki społeczne wewnątrz prowincji. Celem pracy jest ukazanie podobieństw i różnic w podejściu autorów do regionu oraz w charakterze informacji, jakie przekazują ich publikacje.
