The Topic of America in the 18th-Century Jesuit Drama
dc.abstract.en | The American missions conducted by Jesuits were distinguished by a specific sense of cultural accommodation, resulting from a principle contained in the Jesuit Constitution, which obliged them to adjust all their activities to “the persons, place and time”. The effect of applying this principle was an awareness of intercultural communication, not limited to the export of cultural goods. However for the Jesuit college students in Europe the topic of overseas conquest was not a straightforward accounts of historical facts. Instead, they offered a pretext for consciousness-forming work in the areas of education, religious formation, social and political teaching, conducted in the spirit of the propaganda fide. In this context, Jesuit dramas had to accommodate the mentality and expectations of European elites, interested not in the Jesuit spirit of intercultural dialogue, but rather in their own dream of global conquest, which allowed them to reconcile their political and religious aspirations. The paper will discuss in which way the topic of American conquest were instrumentalised in Jesuit drama and served to important pragmatic aspect. The addressees of Jesuit spectacles were in most cases theirs students and patrons: the aristocrats, princes, kings and emperors to whom those plays were dedicated. The authors were teachers from the local college, who hoped to influence the worldview not only of their pupils, but also – of the country’s secular authorities, which remained a particularly important target of the Jesuits’ civic, social and political mission. |
