“Come here! You may kiss me, if you like”: The Motif of Toxic Love in Illustrations for Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

dc.abstract.enThe work examines the motif of toxicity between Pip and Estella, the protagonists of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, depicted on illustrations of several editions of the novel by John McLenan, Marcus Stone, Frederick William Pailthorpe, Henry Matthew Brock and Harry Furniss. The study starts from describing the role of the images in the nineteenth century with commonly used drawing and printing techniques and uses theories from Kate Newell’s “Adaptation and Illustration: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach”. Through analysis, comparison, interpretation and historical background research of chosen pictures, the paper demonstrates the transformation of both characters visible not only in the plot of the story but its drawn renditions as well. Applying concepts of the abovementioned scholar, text proves that Dickens partially leaves a traditional Gothic love to explore a different idea of relationship possible between young people.
dc.abstract.plPraca analizuje motyw toksyczności między Pipem i Estellą, bohaterami Wielkich nadziei Charlesa Dickensa, przedstawiony na ilustracjach kilku wydań powieści przez Johna McLenana, Marcusa Stone'a, Fredericka Williama Pailthorpe'a, Henry'ego Matthew Brocka i Harry'ego Furnissa. Studium uwzględnia rolę rysunku w XIX wieku razem z powszechnie stosowanymi technikami rysowania i drukowania, oraz wykorzystuje teorie z “Adaptation and Illustration: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach” autorstwa Kate Newell. Poprzez analizę, porównanie i badanie tła historycznego wybranych obrazków, praca pokazuje transformację obu postaci widoczną nie tylko w fabule opowieści, ale także w jej rysunkowej interpretacji. Stosując koncepcje wyżej wymienionej badaczki, tekst udowadnia, że Charles Dickens częściowo odchodzi od kanonicznej miłości w literaturze epoki wiktoriańskiej, aby zbadać inną wizję relacji romantycznej możliwej pomiędzy młodymi ludźmi.
