Strażnicy poprawności językowej na Facebooku. Analiza norm wspomagających organizowanie życia zbiorowego w społecznościach sieci

dc.abstract.enOver the years the Internet has become a perfect place for socializing and bonding. At the same time there are plenty of rules that define proper behaviors in the network society. Castells calls those rules and values in a term ‘network cultures’. Modern network societies are mainly based on standards shaped through the years that have been gradually acquired by users. Although those rules have never been formally codified, nowadays they are essential both for the Internet and modern network users. There are many rules you should follow in order to stick to the neti- quette. One of the most important things among them is the language correctness. Proper grammar, spelling and rich vocabulary are considered as crucial qualities of the ideal Internet user. Latest studies show that even over 12 thousand mistakes can be made on the Internet during just one day. There are plenty of people who find it quite disturbing and are not afraid to point out the incorrections out loud. We decided to call this group “the correctors”. Finding examples of the correctors’ actions nowadays is really not that difficult. During our researches we saw many of those people on social me- dia, such as Facebook. We decided to take a closer look on their behavior by analyzing numerous posts and comments on three different Facebook groups – community of mothers, some cooking enthusiasts and one group dedicated strictly to language correctness. In our research we examined most common mistakes made by users as well as specific actions of the correctors. Finally, we did extract five main types of the correctors based on their behavior towards other users. Nowadays social media are one of the most important platforms for communication. Although it might seem that modern network users tend not to care about language correctness any more, rules of the netiquette are still significant. Applying to those common standards not only determine the users’ hierarchy, but also make the Internet much safer and simpler place.
