Relations between Montenegro and the Serbian Orthodox Church. Between independence and identity

dc.abstract.enThe aim of this thesis is to investigate and analyze the complex relationship between Montenegro and and the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC). The thesis will focus on the SOC’s political role in post-communist Montenegro; from the dissolution of SFRY(1991-1992) until the recent UN resolution on Srebrenica in 2024. The thesis will analyze and explore the Church's actions, activism, and positions in selected timeframe. Also, the paper will examine, the SOC's historical background in the country, its role in the society, evolution through political systems, and its significance in shaping ethnic identity. The selected subject holds great importance due to its impact on the political dynamics in Montenegro, identity, and international relations. The relationship between the SOC and Montenegro intersects with the broader matters of identity, culture, spiritual heritage, and the political direction of the country. The SOC holds significant respect in Montenegro, a country deeply linked to neighboring Serbia. The future of not only Montenegro but the entire Balkan peninsula continues to be uncertain as the region is still prone to conflict. Because the SOC holds a remarkable position in Montenegro and influences the country’s political situation, it may largely shape the its future trajectory. The thesis made use of both the historical and institutional methods to ensure both an insight into the historical background and an understanding of the current political situation.
