Onomatopoeia in the English and Polish translations of the first volume of Kiyohiko Azuma’s Yotsuba&! by Amy Forsyth and Tomasz Molski

dc.abstract.enThis bachelor's thesis showcases the issues of onomatopoeia translation in Japanese comics and different ways of tackling them. The 1st chapter introduces the topic and points out how different those comics are from Western ones, establishing the paper’s purpose. The 2nd and 3rd chapters include the definition of the figure of speech called 'onomatopoeia' and establish its possible classifications. Furthermore, the many rules imposed by publishers in terms of graphic presentation of the manga they release are delineated in the 4th chapter. In the 5th and 6th chapters, the classifications of onomatopoeia are applied to Kiyohiko Azuma's manga Yotsuba&! and its English and Polish translations, enabling thorough analysis of the translators’ choices. In the 7th chapter, those choices are compared, presenting the disparities between the practices of publishing houses and individual translators from the United States, Poland, and other countries. The errors made in both versions and their possible origin are also investigated. The results of the analysis show that the two volumes differ in many ways, including but not limited to types of errors, word count, classifications of onomatopoeia and the types of solutions applied.
dc.abstract.plNiniejsza praca licencjacka przedstawia kwestie tłumaczenia onomatopei w japońskich komiksach i różne sposoby radzenia sobie z nimi. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiony jest temat oraz różnice między japońskimi a zachodnimi komiksami i wyznaczony jest cel pracy. W rozdziale drugim i trzecim ustalona jest definicja onomatopei jako środka stylistycznego oraz potencjalne klasyfikacje onomatopei. Ponadto, w czwartym rozdziale rozwinięty jest temat zasad narzucanych przez wydawców w sprawie graficznej prezentacji wydawanych przez nich mang. W piątym i szóstym rozdziale klasyfikacje onomatopei zastosowane są do omówienia mangi Yotsuba! Kiyohiko Azumy i jej polskiego i angielskiego tłumaczenia, co umożliwia dogłębną analizę decyzji tłumaczy. Decyzje te są porównane w rozdziale siódmym, w którym pokazano również rozbieżności między zwyczajami wydawców i tłumaczy ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, Polski i innych krajów. Przeprowadzono również analizę błędów popełnionych w obu wersjach i ich możliwego pochodzenia. Wnioski pokazują, że tomy różnią się od siebie pod wieloma względami, między innymi pod względem rodzajów błędów, liczby słów, klasyfikacji onomatopei i zastosowanych rozwiązań.
