American Hardcore Punk and Its Impact on Society

dc.abstract.enThe thesis explores the influential role of punk rock in the United States, focusing on its emergence, characteristics, and most prominent figures. The dissertation delves into the development of the American punk scene, particularly the rise of hardcore punk on the West Coast and its engagement with political and social issues. The study examines the DIY ethos that defined the American hardcore movement, including the establishment of independent record labels, the importance of zines as a means of expression and information sharing, and the emergence of the Straight Edge movement as a rejection of self-destructive behaviors. Moreover, the thesis explores the challenges posed by far-right extremism within the American punk scene and the resistance it faced from the musicians and community. Through the analysis of iconic songs like Straight Edge or Rebel Girl, the dissertation underscores punk’s role in promoting unity, tolerance, and social critique. By investigating the cultural and societal impact of punk rock in the United States, this study sheds light on its lasting influence and legacy.
dc.abstract.plPraca bada wpływ punk rocka w Stanach Zjednoczonych, skupiając się na historii gatunku, jego cechach charakterystycznych oraz najważniejszych postaciach. Opowiada o rozwoju amerykańskiej sceny punkowej, a w szczególności o powstaniu odmiany hardcore punk na Zachodnim Wybrzeżu i charakterystycznym zaangażowaniu tego gatunku w aspekty polityczne i społeczne. Praca analizuje również etos DIY, który zdefiniował amerykański hardcore wraz z powstaniem niezależnych wytwórni płytowych, znaczeniem zinów jako środków ekspresji i wymiany informacji, oraz utworzeniem ruchu Straight Edge jako wyrazu odrzucenia zachowań autodestrukcyjnych. Poprzez analizę kultowych utworów jak „Straight Edge” czy „Rebel Girl,” praca podkreśla rolę punku w krytyce społecznej oraz promowaniu jedności i tolerancji. Badając historię punk rocka w Stanach Zjednoczonych, praca rzuca światło na trwający wpływ społeczny i dziedzictwo kulturowe gatunku.
