Identity and Self-Creation in Philip Roth’s American Trilogy

dc.abstract.enThis thesis is concerned with the question of identity and self-creation in the American Trilogy written by Philip Roth, a contemporary American author. The trilogy consists of the following novels: American Pastoral, I Married a Communist, and The Human Stain. The primary objective of the thesis is to show how, using historical and cultural contexts, Philip Roth explores his characters' identities and self-inventions. The first chapter focuses on the story of Seymour Levov and his daughter Meredith from American Pastoral. The subject of American identity and self-creations of these two characters is examined in the broader American cultural and historical context. The second chapter is dedicated to Ira Ringold from I Married a Communist and his political identity. The anti-communist climate of America in the 1950s has an influence on the effect of Ira's self-creation. The third chapter revolves around the central character of The Human Stain, whose main action is set in the 1990s. The racial identity and self-creation of Coleman Silk, who is an African American that hides the truth about his race, is thoroughly analyzed.
dc.abstract.plNiniejsza praca podejmuje temat tożsamości i autokreacji w Trylogii amerykańskiej autorstwa współczesnego amerykańskiego pisarza Philipa Rotha. W skład trylogii wchodzą następujące powieści: Amerykańska sielanka, Wyszłam za komunistę, oraz Ludzka skaza. Głównym zadaniem pracy jest przedstawienie jak, za pomocą kontekstów historycznych i kulturowych, Philip Roth zgłębia tożsamości i autokreacje swoich bohaterów w Trylogii amerykańskiej. Pierwszy rozdział koncentruje się na historii Seymoura Levova i jego córki Meredith z Amerykańskiej sielanki. Tożsamość amerykańska i autokreacja bohaterów jest analizowana w szerszym kontekście kulturowym i historycznym. Drugi rozdział skupia się na postaci Iry Ringolda z Wyszłam za komunistę i jego tożsamości politycznej. Nastroje antykomunistyczne w Ameryce lat 50. mają wpływ na efekt autokreacji komunisty. Trzeci rozdział dotyczy protagonisty Ludzkiej skazy, której główna akcja osadzona jest w latach 90. ubiegłego wieku. W tym rozdziale poddano szczegółowej analizie tożsamość rasową i autokreację Afroamerykanina Colemana Silka, który ukrywa swoją prawdziwą przynależność rasową.
