The representation of the ideals of the Girl Guide movement in Eleanor M. Brent-Dyer’s Chalet School novels (1925-1970)

dc.abstract.enThis thesis examines the representation of the Girl Guide movement's ideals in Elinor M. Brent-Dyer's Chalet School novels, published between 1923 and 1970 and argues about their embodiment of the core values of the Girl Guide movement. The thesis is structured into four chapters, each examining a specific aspect of the Girl Guide movement's influence on the novels. The first, introductory chapter explores the guiding fiction and analyses how the Chalet School series emerged within this context. The Second chapter goes on to examine how the Chalet School girls are presented embodying traditional expectations of femininity while also demonstrating independence and strength. The third chapter focuses on representation of female leadership. The final chapter is built around how the novels promote a lifestyle that balances physical activity and intellectual pursuits.
dc.abstract.plNiniejsza praca bada w jaki sposób przedstwione zostały ideały ruchu Girl Guide w powieściach Elinor M. Brent-Dyer Chalet School, opublikowanych w latach 1923-1970. Dowodzi również faktu zawarcia w nich podstawowych wartości, którymi kierowała się wcześniej wspomniana organizacja. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów, z których każdy bada konkretny aspekt wpływu ruchu Girl Guide na powieści. Pierwszy, wprowadzający rozdział bada i analizuje, w jaki sposób seria Chalet School prezentuje się w kontekście fikcji dla dziewcząt XXw. W drugim rozdziale pzredstawiono rozważania na temat tego czy sposób w jaki przedstawiane są dziewczęta z Chalet School ucieleśnia tradycyjne oczekiwania co do kobiecości, jednocześnie prezentując swoją niezależność i siłę. Trzeci rozdział koncentruje się na przedstawieniu kobiecego przywództwa. Ostatni rozdział skupia się na tym w jaki sposób powieści promują styl życia, który równoważy aktywność fizyczną oraz rozwój intelektualny.
